Neonatal Intensive Care
Sometimes life throws you a curve, something unexpected. While most babies are born full-term and healthy, some babies just can't wait, and others need some help getting started. For these moments, Dupont Hospital offers its neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). We bring together nurturing, developmental care for babies in a soothing, family-centered environment. And, we appreciate that you trust us to care for your infant when they need that extra-special care.
Premature babies from 23 weeks' gestation and full-term babies needing assistance are cared for in the NICU. The NICU contains some very impressive technology, but it's the staff of neonatologists and NICU nurses who make the difference. Certainly we're proud of their combined experience, skills and education, but the way they truly care for each baby and family – that's the Dupont Difference.
The NICU is a resource available for families all over northeast Indiana and northwest Ohio. The NICU team recognizes that each family member needs special attention and care – someone to answer their questions, offer a word of encouragement, help talk with baby's siblings or just listen to mom or dad.
At Dupont Hospital we believe in bringing together nurturing, developmental care for babies in a soothing, family-centered environment. And we appreciate that you trust us to care for your infant when they need that extra special care.
NICU Visiting Hours
We want mom with baby whenever possible, and dad or other significant person with baby when mom can't be. Other than that, talk with the nurses about extended family and sibling visits. We'll help you make the best arrangements for your baby and you.
Developmental Care Philosophy
At Dupont Hospital we've designed the neonatal intensive care unit with both babies and families in mind. We specialize in developmental care, the support of an infant's growth and maturation through control of environment (i.e. light and sound), positioning and handling. This kind of care and attention to detail is paramount for a premature or critically infant's success. This special approach reduces stress and enhances self-regulatory behaviors. When developmental philosophy is coupled with a nurturing environment the result is optimal outcomes for the infant.
The level III NICU offers the latest in technology and developmental care techniques and practices. The unit is staffed by five fellowship-trained, board-certified neonatologists and specially-trained nurses. We have also taken great care in creating a team approach by training ancillary and support staff to complement our care philosophy. This team includes respiratory therapists, lactation consultants, occupational, speech and physical therapists, case managers and chaplain.
