Cardiac Calcium Scoring
Coronary artery disease (CAD) is the leading cause of death in the United States. When detected early, however, persons affected by CAD often have a better prognosis. At Dupont Hospital, we utilize technology that can provide you with such early detection that can be life-saving.
Cardiac scoring is a noninvasive, painless scanning technology that measures the amount of plaque buildup in the coronary arteries. The procedure, which usually takes less than 10 minutes to complete and costs only $50, can help predict heart disease in people who appear perfectly healthy.
Patients pass through an ultrafast CT scanner that produces images of the coronary arteries. These images are used to help detect the early stages of coronary artery disease.

A physician referral is not required.
Who should consider having a cardiac scoring scan?
A heart attack can strike anyone, regardless of age or level of fitness. There are risk factors, however, that may indicate a predisposition to heart disease. If you are older than 40 with one or more of the following risk factors, cardiac scoring might benefit you:
- Family history of early heart disease, heart attack or stroke
- High cholesterol levels
- High blood pressure
- Diabetes
- Smoking
- Obesity and/or prolonged inactivity
- Stress
Persons with documented coronary artery disease should not consider cardiac scoring.
